Mutation works like a typo in a group order.

Every mutation is one question asked twice: did the DNA change reach the sequence that codes, and did it land in a cell that gets passed on? Where in the gene decides whether the protein breaks; somatic versus germ line decides whether it dies with you or travels to the next generation.
