the fridge, the kettle, the cut-up potato.

Milk in the fridge goes off slower for one reason: colder particles move slower, so fewer collisions carry enough energy to clear the activation energy. Same milk, same bacteria, same reactions — just fewer collisions that count.

A kettle is the opposite lever. Heat it and the particles move faster, so more of them arrive with enough energy and more of them hit at all. Temperature is the only factor that pushes both dials at once, which is why warming a solution is so brutally effective.

Cutting a potato small makes it cook faster because surface area gives the particles more places to meet — more collisions, not better ones. Concentration and pressure work the same way. They raise the odds of a hit; they never guarantee a hit succeeds.

what examiners catch — students claim every collision above the activation energy reacts (orientation is the second gate, and most fail it), or they say a factor raised the energy of collisions when it only raised their frequency. Say which dial moved.
