Medicare and the PBS

Medicare and the PBS are the two Commonwealth schemes that pay most of an everyday health bill, and they split it in opposite ways. Medicare pays a fixed rebate for a listed medical service such as a GP visit; anything the doctor charges above the schedule fee becomes the patient's gap, and when the doctor accepts the rebate as full payment the visit is bulk billed. The PBS pays whatever a listed prescription medicine costs above a capped co-payment, so the patient's share never rises past the cap.
