Between 1918 and 1921 the Bolsheviks beat four separate White armies because they held the centre, the railways and the factories while Kolchak, Denikin, Yudenich and Wrangel attacked from the edges and never coordinated. Behind the lines the brief State Capitalism of spring 1918 gave way to War Communism: armed squads requisitioned grain by quota, large industry was nationalised, private trade was banned and both sides ruled by terror. The policy that kept the Red Army fed emptied the villages, so victory arrived with the harvest near half its pre-war level, industry at about a fifth of 1913, the Tambov rising and the Kronstadt revolt.
