Confidence Intervals for Population Parameters

A confidence interval combines point estimation with margin of error to create an interval estimate, typically expressed as the sample statistic plus or minus a critical value times the standard error. The confidence level, such as 95 percent, indicates that if we repeated the sampling process infinitely, approximately 95 percent of constructed intervals would contain the true population parameter. You never measure the whole population — you measure one sample and ask how far off it could plausibly be. The sample mean has its own distribution; know its spread and you can quantify your uncertainty. Intervals, tests, estimates — readings off that one distribution.

A confidence interval provides a range of plausible values for a population parameter by taking the sample statistic and adding/subtracting the margin of error calculated from the critical value multiplied by the standard error.
