A local allergic reaction stays confined to the area of contact — sneezing from pollen, hives from a food allergen, or itching at a bee sting site. Histamine released by mast cells causes blood vessels to dilate and leak fluid, creating the classic symptoms: redness, swelling, mucus production, and itching. This is uncomfortable but not life-threatening. Antihistamines block histamine receptors, preventing these effects without touching the allergen itself. The reaction is self-limiting because only nearby mast cells degranulate, and the immune response doesn't cascade beyond the local tissue.
