Single-blind keeps participants unaware of their condition — whether they received the drug or placebo. This controls for participant expectancy effects: if you know you got the real treatment, your beliefs about recovery can trigger genuine physiological changes. The participant's subjective experience stays clean, but the experimenter still knows who got what, leaving room for unconscious influence during measurement or interaction.
Double-blind procedures hide condition assignment from both participants and experimenters because knowing what "should" happen unconsciously biases observation, measurement, and interaction — even in trained researchers who believe they're objective.
