Insulin is released by beta cells in the pancreas after eating and binds to receptors on liver and muscle cells. This binding triggers three key effects: it increases the number of glucose transport proteins in cell membranes allowing more glucose uptake, activates enzymes for glycogenesis to convert glucose into glycogen for storage, and increases glucose use in cellular respiration. The result is a rapid decrease in blood glucose levels back toward the normal range of 4-6 mmol/L.
