Pavlov discovered classical conditioning by accident while studying digestion in dogs. He noticed dogs began salivating before food arrived — just at the sound of his footsteps. He systematically paired a bell (NS) with meat powder (UCS) that naturally caused salivation (UCR). After repeated pairings, the bell alone (now CS) triggered salivation (CR). The dogs had no control over this response — their autonomic nervous system had formed a new association automatically. This demonstrated that reflexive responses could be transferred to previously neutral stimuli through temporal pairing, a process that happens without conscious awareness or voluntary behaviour.
Classical conditioning produces involuntary reflexive responses through repeated pairing of a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus — the learner remains passive throughout the entire process.
