A function-restored device rebuilds part of the body's own pathway. A cochlear implant, for example, skips the damaged hair cells of the inner ear but still feeds electrical signals into the intact auditory nerve — so the brain does the actual hearing. A pacemaker works the same way, nudging the heart's own electrical conducting system back into rhythm rather than pumping the blood itself. In these cases the organ is still partly doing its job; the technology just supplies the missing step.
