Blood Glucose Regulation
Beta cells in the islets of Langerhans detect elevated blood glucose and secrete insulin, while alpha cells detect decreased blood glucose and secrete glucagon, creating antagonistic hormone control. These hormones act on liver cells to either store or release glucose, with insulin promoting glucose uptake and glycogenesis while glucagon promotes glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.
